Sumaiya is an MASc student in the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC), working under the supervision of Dr. Babak Shadgan and Dr. Brian Grunau. She began her graduate studies in the MEng program in January 2025 and transferred to the MASc program in September 2025. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in 2022. Before starting her MASc program, she completed a research internship at IBL, where she worked on measuring the depth of penetration of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in biological tissue. Her current research focuses on developing NIRS-based technology for cerebral perfusion monitoring during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to improve critical care settings.
